Pocket Door Hardware Guide

Soft Close Hardware

Soft-close hardware improves the everyday operation of a pocket door by controlling its movement near the end of travel. Related accessories, including soft-open units and EZ Closers, can also help reduce impact and make a recessed door easier to retrieve.

Quick comparison of pocket door accessories

01

Soft Close

Slows the door near the jamb and guides it through the final part of the closing movement.

02

Soft Open

Cushions the door as it enters the wall pocket and helps reduce hard impact at the back of the opening.

03

EZ Closer

Releases a fully recessed pocket door with a push, bringing the door edge outward so it is easier to grasp.

Controlled Closing

How Soft-Close Pocket Door Hardware Works

A soft-close unit is positioned inside the pocket-door track. As the door approaches the closed position, the mechanism engages and controls the final movement toward the jamb.

This creates a quieter, more finished operating feel and can help reduce repeated impact on the door, jamb, pull, and surrounding trim.

  • Reduces abrupt closing near the jamb
  • Creates smoother everyday operation
  • Helps protect surrounding door components
  • Useful in bedrooms, bathrooms, offices, and shared spaces

Reverse-Direction Control

What Is Soft Open?

Soft-open hardware performs a similar cushioning function at the opposite end of travel. Instead of controlling the door near the closing jamb, it slows the door as it moves into the wall pocket.

On compatible systems, the same style of mechanism may be installed in the opposite direction to provide either soft-close or soft-open operation. A door can also be equipped with both when the track, door size, and available travel allow it.

Push-to-Release Accessory

What Is a Pocket Door EZ Closer?

Despite its name, the EZ Closer does not pull the door shut. It is a spring-loaded accessory installed at the back of the pocket. When the edge of the recessed door is pushed inward, the device releases and moves the door outward far enough to grasp.

It is especially useful when the door is designed to disappear fully into the wall and an exposed edge pull is difficult to reach.

  • Helps retrieve a door from inside the wall pocket
  • Activates with a push on the door edge
  • Uses a flush-fitting, spring-loaded design
  • Can be used where a soft-open unit is not practical

Combined Convenience

Soft Close and EZ Closer Together

These two accessories address different ends of the door’s movement. Soft Close controls the final movement toward the jamb, while the EZ Closer helps release the door after it has been pushed fully into the wall pocket.

Together, they can provide a practical combination for homeowners who want quieter closing without giving up the clean appearance of a fully recessed pocket door.

At the closed end Soft Close controls the door near the jamb.
At the pocket end EZ Closer helps push the recessed door outward.

Where It Works Well

Good Applications for Soft-Close Hardware

Bedrooms

Quieter door movement can reduce disruption when rooms are being used at different times of the day.

Bathrooms

Controlled closing gives frequently used privacy doors a smoother, more deliberate feel.

Home Offices

Soft operation can be helpful in rooms used for calls, meetings, and focused work.

Accessible Homes

A controlled door and push-to-release accessory may make operation more convenient for some users.

Children’s Rooms

Slower movement near the end of travel may help reduce abrupt door impacts during everyday use.

High-Use Openings

Kitchens, pantries, laundry areas, and shared rooms benefit from hardware selected for repeated operation.

Planning Checklist

What to Confirm Before Ordering

Soft-close accessories must match the door, track, hangers, and available travel inside the opening.

01

Door weight

Check the rated capacity of the complete track, rollers, and closing mechanism—not only the door hangers.

02

Door width

Narrow doors may not provide enough track travel for multiple dampening devices.

03

Track compatibility

Use hardware designed for the specific track profile and roller system being installed.

04

Door thickness

Confirm the frame kit, bottom guide, hangers, and accessories are suitable for the finished door thickness.

05

Desired operation

Decide whether the project needs Soft Close, Soft Open, EZ Closer, or a combination of these features.

06

New or existing door

Some accessories are easiest to install during framing, while retrofit access may require removal of trim or track components.

For Homeowners

Choose the Feature You Will Notice Every Day

Select Soft Close when quieter closing is the main goal. Add Soft Open when you want cushioning at the back of the pocket. Consider an EZ Closer when the door will sit fully inside the wall and needs a simple way to be released.

For Builders and Remodelers

Specify the Hardware Before Framing Is Complete

Confirm track length, door weight, door width, hanger type, trigger placement, pocket depth, and service access before closing the wall. Early coordination helps prevent conflicts with framing, electrical work, plumbing, and door travel.
